This is an example of a neutral, steel-gray platinum print, ca. 1900. The print is a high-end studio portrait presented in an elaborate folder with tissue interleaving. The platinum print process was commonly used at the time for expensive portraiture because of its beautiful tonality, neutral black image color, and matte surface, and because it was considered more "artistic" and "refined" than the silver processes of the day.

The image carries detail in all areas of the print, exhibiting no signs of fading.

Also, notice the dark background; its richness moves the man forward and brings a sense of immediacy and importance to his portrait.
