Notes on this view:

This carbon print, made by the Franz Hanfstaengl printing company, is a reproduction of a painting made by Cranach the Elder entitled "The Old Lover". The wooden frame contained within the confines of the image provides evidence that this is an art reproduction. This print was originally part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art print study collection, which was used primarily by art historians and scholars. Half of this collection was donated to IPI and is now being used as a process study collection. The prints in the collection were dry-mounted to similarly colored boards and were made by many companies using various processes. Close attention should be given to the lack of deterioration. The carbon process is a stable, robust print process consisting of a gelatin layer containing small pigment particles that comprise the image.
