Notes on this view:

This hand-colored real photo postcard portrays a WWI-era French soldier. Beneath the image the message, “Bonne Année” or “Happy New Year” has been optically printed. French romantic hand-colored tableaux postcards such as this were extremely popular during WWI. The postcard industry peaked around this time, which is often referred to as the “golden age” of real-photo postcards due to an increase in correspondence during the war. The images often evoke love, longing, and patriotism inferring these postcards should be sent from a soldier to a significant other or vise versa. However, the message on the back of this postcard is addressed to an aunt and uncle.
