Notes on this view:

This is an example of a sixth plate (measures 2 ¾” x 3 ¼”) relievo ambrotype. Relievo is a presentation method intended to create the illusion of a three-dimensional image. To make a relievo ambrotype, the collodion surrounding the sitter was removed typically by scratching it away. A black varnish was applied behind the sitter then a clear piece of glass and white paper was often placed behind the image plate. This allowed the image to cast a shadow onto the white paper giving the feeling of three-dimensionality. In this example the black varnish was painted onto the clear glass rather than directly onto the image plate. Behind the clear glass was placed a pinkish piece of paper (the color has faded). There were many ways in which relievo ambrotypes were presented. Other examples may have the varnish painted directly onto the image, or a second image behind the image plate to serve as a backdrop.
