Notes on this view:

This is an example of an early ambrotype. Notice the semi-ornate embellishment of the preserver and the simple mat beneath it. Preservers and mats could range from plain to highly ornate, with those produced earlier typically being much simpler than the ones made after the second half of the 1850s.
