Notes on this view:

The "gem" tintype was the smallest format made measuring ¾ x 1 inch, about the size of a postage stamp. Often gem tintypes were mounted in a stamped brass mat (like those found on daguerreotypes) and crimped on a card mount, as seen here. They were also placed into decorated paper window mats as well as incorporated into jewelry.
