Notes on this view:

Gustav Luederitz produced this mezzotint of Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844), from an original by Franz Kruger. Thorvaldsen, also spelled Thorwaldsen, was an important European sculptor in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. He was born in Copenhagen, began his education in sculpture at age eleven, and spent most of his career in Rome. He returned to Copenhagen late in life and the Thorvaldsen Museum was built to honor him and showcase his work. Working in the Neo-Classical style, Thordvaldsen drew on the beauty of classical art using primarily Greek and Roman mythology as his subject matter while invoking the ideals of his time.
